Leaders stress Scots vote will stand
Alex Salmond says the independence referendum is “a once in a generation opportunity” while Alistair Darling says there would be “no way back”.
If this is how England would like the potential divorce go through, so be it. Honestly, I’m not 100% sure about what would happen if Scotland were to declare its independence this Thursday. But I do think that the economy will sort itself out in time, and that if both sides are willing to be adults about this, it shouldn’t be an overly painful thing to anyone for Scotland to go its own separate way. What’s at stake, for me at least, is the sense that there is some arc towards justice and the triumph of kindness, respect, and courtesy over military might, deceit, and thuggish brutality.
I want to see humanity win from the Scotland v. Union debate. I want the “Ayes” to win, because it will prove to me that there is something here in this world that’s worth fighting for, regardless of the cost. I want to see the triumph of humanity over money, economy adopted to the environment, democracy over tyranny and government by force or deceit.
I want the world to grow, and not to die on the vine.
If that’s not worth fighting for, I don’t know what is.
